INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SCIENCE AND ETHICS
The college stands with pride and honour to have an international symposium hosted on the campus on a theme becoming of its ideals on the 10 and 11 of January, 2011 in association with IISR, Pune. The symposium was on 'Science and Ethics' with special focus on medical practices such as euthanasia, cloning, nano-medicine and organ donation in the cultural context of India. It was attended by theological, philosophical, legal, medical and sociological luminaries across the globe. Dr. Ignacimuthu, the former Vice Chancellor of Madras University, inaugurated the symposium and those who presented the papers included Prof.(Dr.) Roger Burggraeve of Catholic University, Leuven, Belgium, Dr. John J.Gillon, an Attorney at Law, Colarado, USA, Dr. Chae Young Kim of Sogany University, South Korea,Dr. Iba Kone of Kenya,Dr . K.S.Radhakrishnan from Kochi, Dr.Suma George from Bangalore, Dr. Kuruvilla Pandikattu from Pune, Dr. Sarojini Henry from Chennai, Dr. Subrata Chattopadyaya from Bhubaneswar, Dr. C.S. Paulose from Kochi, and Dr. P.A. Jose from Thodupuzha. The coordinators of the great event were Rev. Dr. Manuel Pichalakkatt and Dr.Joe Jacob.
INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SCIENCE WITH VIRTUAL OBSERVATORY
Department of Physics, in collaboration with IUCAA Resource Centre (IRC) Kochi, conducted a four day workshop on "Science with Virtual Observatory" from 10 to 13, October, 2011. World renowned astronomers Prof. Massimo Ramella and Dr. Marco Molinaro from INAF, Trieste, Italy, who have been in the field of popularizing astronomy for many years, were the resource persons.
INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON SHAKESPEAREAN THEATRE
The Centre for English Studies, Newman College conducted an international seminar on Shakespearean Theatre on 26 August, 2011. Mr. Stephen Brien and Ms.Catherine Brien, hailing from the United Kingdom, were the resource persons. They talked on the modern presentation of Shakespearean plays at Stratford upon Avon.
INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON ENGLISH ROMANTICS
The Centre for English Studies, Newman College conducted an international seminar on English Romantics on 25 January 2012. The theme of the seminar was Wordsworth's Wonderland. Prof. Nigel Pleming talked extensively on Wordsworth's poetry.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE: CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES
To highlight the issues and concerns of climate change, the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry in association with the UGC Sponsored Centre for Gandhian Studies,Newman College, Thodupuzha and the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment,has organised a three day national conference on 'Climate Change: Challenges and Strategies' during 13-15 February,2012.The conference focused on the issues of Potential causes of the changing climate, Environmental concerns, Changing climate and its impact on biodiversity, Arctic biodiversity and climate change, Biodiversity of Kuttanad and climate change, Climate change and human rights, Climate change and economic marginalization, and Climate change and gender marginalization. The inaugural meeting was presided over by Dr. T.M. Joseph, the Principal of the college and the national conference was formally declared inaugurated by Prof. Abdul Aziz, former Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University. On the first day, Dr. Bijoy Nandan, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology & Biochemistry, School of Marine Sciences, CUSAT, Kochi, talked on 'Wetland Biodiversity and Climate Change'. Dr. Hamza Varikodan, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, chaired the afternoon session and Dr. M. R. Ramesh Kumar, National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, presented papers on 'Monsoon and Cyclones: Role of Climate Change', Dr. Jayasree Ravadekar, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, on 'Changes in Temperature and Precipitation Extremes over India', Dr. Bijoy Nandan, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology & Biochemistry, School of Marine Sciences, CUSAT, Kochi, on 'Experience of Climate Change in Arctic Ecosystems', and Mary Jisha Francis, National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, on 'Is there an Increasing Trend in the Tropical Cyclones over the North Indian Ocean?'.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON WOMEN IN THEATRE-NOOPURANGANAM
The Centre for English Studies, Newman College, conducted, 'Noopuranganam', a national seminar on 13-14 of December, 2011 on the theme of 'Women in Theatre'. After delivering the inaugural address, Dr. K.G.Paulose talked on the classical female theatre of Kerala, especially, Nangiar Kooth and Mohiniattom. His team of performing artists, including veteran artists, Kalamandalam Athira, Kalamandalam Lonisha,Kalamadalam Jayaraj and Kalamandalam Subeesh performed before the audience to demonstrate the nuances of the classical art. Dr. Jose George, Dept of English, M.A. College, Kothamangalam, elaborated on the 'Genderization in Global Multi-Cultural Popular Dramatic Performance Theory and Practice'A modern version of the theatre was presented with the help of multi-media. Later, eminent scholars presented various academic papers on the theme of women theatre. The session was chaired by Dr. George Justine, retired Professor of English, Newman College, Thodupuzha. Dr. Sonia James, Dept. of English, St. Peter's College, Kolenchery, Dr. Ancy Joseph, Dept. of English, St. Dominic's College, Kanjirapally, Smt. Kavitha Gopalakrishnan, Dept. of English, Vishwajyothi College of Engineering, Vazhakulam and Smt. Anju K.N., Dept. of English, Govt. Polytechnic, Purappuzha, talked extensively on the classical art of Kerala. On the second day, Prof. Chandradasan, St. Albert's College, Ernakulam, rendered an elaborate lecture on 'Women's Role in Campus Theatre'. Prof. Rajeswari, retired teacher from St. Xavier's College, Thumba and President of 'Nereeksha', a women's theatre group, spoke on the women's role in the modern theatre of Kerala, expostulating scenes from her play 'Pravachaka'. Dr. Anita Manuel, Associate Professor of English, K.C.G. College of Technology, Chennai, exposed 'The Gender Trajectories in Elizabethan and Contemporary British Theatre'. The Seminar was sponsored by the Research Promotion Cell of the College and co-ordinated by the Head of the Department of English, Prof. Vincent John K. along with Prof. P.A. John, Dr. (Sr.) Aniamma V.M. and Dr. Bijimol Thomas, from the Department of English.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON RECENT TRENDS IN FUZZY MATHEMATICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Department of Mathematics in association with Kerala Mathematics Association (KMA) organized a National Seminar on "Recent Trends in Fuzzy Mathematics and its Applications" from 22 to 23 September 2011. The programme was sponsored by the UGC. The programme provided a platform for deliberating the recent trends in this field.The programme was co-ordinated by Prof. Marykutty Thomas, Head, Department of Mathematics, Dr. T. Thrivikraman, Academic Secretary, KMA and Dr. K.V. Alice, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT
Department of Chemistry organized a one day national seminar on "Sustainable Waste Management" on 26 August, 2011. Smt. Sreekala S., Environment Engineer, Kerala State Pollution Control Board, Sri. Jose Lewis,Officer,Department of Enforcement & Law, Govt. of India and Sri. Kabeer B. Haroon, Deputy Director, National Savings Scheme, Finance Department, Government of Kerala were the main speakers.The programme was co-ordinated by Dr. Lovely Mathew P., Prof. Clement T.G. and Prof. Jose Mathew of the Department of Chemistry.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE CONSERVATION OF RED-LISTED MEDICINAL PLANTS
The Department of Botany organized a UGC sponsored national seminar on 'The Conservation of Redlisted Medicinal Plants' from 2 to 3 September, 2010. Sri. P.J. Joseph M.L.A. inaugurated the seminar. Dr. C. Kunhikannan, Scientist, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore, delivered the key-note address, expressing the need for an effective strategy to conserve the threatened species of medicinal plants in the Western Ghats, a hot spot in terms of diversity of such plants, and an active monitoring of their population. As many as 32 academic papers were presented by scholars from various parts of the country. Dr. Stephen Joseph, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, co-ordinated the event.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON GANDHIAN STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE COMMUNAL HARMONY AND DEVELOPMENT
The Centre for Gandhian Studies and Department of Political Science jointly organized a UGC sponsored two day national seminar on 'Gandhian Strategies for Sustainable Communal Harmony and Development' on 3-4 March, 2011. Sri. P.J.Joseph M.L.A. inaugurated the seminar, while Msgr. Thomas Malekudy, the Manager of the college, presided over. The speakers were well known academicians, hailing from the length and breadth of the country, viz; Dr. Arindam Dakua and Sri. Smruthi Ranjan Dhal from JNU, New Delhi, Dr. Suma George, Dr. Rajesh K and Dr. Amarjeet Singh from Bangalore, Dr. Kuruvilla Pandikattu from Pune, Dr. Dasarathi Bhuyan and Dr. Purna Chandran Pradhan from Orissa, Dr. Sabu Thomas from Kozhikode, Dr. Jos Chathukulam from Kottayam, Dr. P.A.Jose from Thodupuzha and Sri.K.M. Chummar, a noted freedom fighter. 11 research papers were presented. Dr. P.A. Jose of the Department of Political Science co-ordinated the seminar.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION POLICIES IN INDIA
The Department of Political Science organized a UGC sponsored national seminar on 'Affirmative Action Policies in India' on 24-25 March, 2011. Dr. N.K.Jayakumar, the noted legal expert and Vice Chancellor of NUALS, Kochi, inaugurated and scholars from all corners of the land, like Dr.Madan Mohan and Dr. Muhammed Kashif Imam from JNU, New Delhi, Dr. Hussain Khan from Warangal, Dr. G.Sreeramalu from Gulbarga, Sri. Rennymon K.C. and Mr. Sheffique V from the Central University, Hyderabad, Dr. Jos Chathukulam from Kottayam, Dr. Srabeshwar Sahoo from Ahmedabad, Dr. Arunkumar Dawn from Culcutta, Dr. Malish C.M. from IIT, New Delhi, Dr. Jose Sebastian from Thiruvananthapuram and Sri. K.Rajasekharan from KILA have presented their papers. Dr.P.A.Jose, Head, Department of Political Science, was the organising secretary of the seminar.
NATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE GENRE OF INDIAN ENGLISH SHORT STORY: PROBLEMS, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES
A UGC Sponsored National seminar on 'The Genre of Indian English Short Story: Problems, Challenges and Opportunities' was organised by the Department of English from 24 to 25 of September 2010. The resource persons hailed from various parts of the country. They were Dr. Sunil Sharma and Dr. Sangeetha.S.Sharma, Mumbai, Dr. Jayadeep Sarangi, Culcutta, Dr.M.A. Jayaraju, Madurai, Prof. Rajkamal Shiromani, Patna, Dr.G. Bhaskaran and Dr. S.Cintana, Virudhunagar, Dr. S.Kumaran, Chennai, Prof.P.V.Laxmi Prasad, Karimnagar and Dr. Joji John Panicker, Kottayam. Dr.K.V.Dominic, Department of English, co-ordianted the national event.
WORKSHOP ON PROMOTION OF ETHICS AND HUMAN VALUES IN EDUCATION
The UGC has sanctioned a novel programme to inculcate ethical sense and human values in education by sponsoring a Two Day Workshop on 'Promotion of Ethics and Human Values In Education', for the school teachers of the Idukki district on 23 - 24, November 2010. It aimed at imparting a vision and value to teachers that such a vision and value shall percolate down to their students and to the society at large. Sri. P.C.Cyriac IAS,(Rtd), former Chairman of the Rubber Board lighted the lamp, in the valuable presence of the Manager of the College, Msgr. Thomas Malekudy. Eminent leaders of the society, Arch Bishop Mar Joseph Powathil, Mar George Punnakottil, the Bishop of Kothamangalam, Rev.Dr. Mani Puthiyidam, Sri.P.U.Thomas and Dr. Rouble Raj were the resource persons. Dr. P.A. Jose and Dr. (Sr.) Alphonsa P.O. co-ordinated the programme.

SEMINAR ON LIFE STYLE DISEASES-SILENT KILLERS
The Department of Zoology organized a seminar on 'Life Style Diseases - Silent Killers' on 3 April 2012, which was sponsored by National Rural Health Mission, Government of Kerala. In the first session, Dr. Jose Joseph, Head, Department of Community Medicine, Medical College, Kottayam, talked on 'Life Style Diseases - Silent Killers'. The second session was handled by Dr. Sarath G. Rao, Assistant Surgeon and Medical Officer, who dealt with 'Communicable Diseases and their Prevention'. Prof. Thampi Varghese and Prof. Laly Paul were the co-ordinators.
WORKSHOP ON LEARN to EARN
The NSS unit organised a three day intercollegiate Workshop on 'Learn to Earn' for the NSS volunteers of Mahatma Gandhi Uiversity, Kottayam, on 3-5, December, 2011. Dr. K.Prakash, Programme co-ordinator, NSS, M.G.University, delivered the keynote address at the inaugural session. The workshop aimed at equipping NSS volunteers with skills of survival in practical life like paper bag making, soap making etc. There were informative classes on environmental conservation, organic farming and effective leadership.
SEMINAR ON STINGLESS BEE KEEPING (MELIPONICULTURE)
Department of Zoology organized a state level seminar on Stingless Bee Keeping (Meliponiculture) on 20 September, 2011. Prof. Sajan Jose K., Associate Professor, St. Joseph's College, Moolamattom, led the programme. The Department of Botany, Newman College, Thodupuzha conducted a one day seminar on "Modern Trends in Organic Farming" in association with Peermade Development Society (PDS) on 23 August, 2011. Sri. Sabu M. Simon, Senior Programme Officer, PDS was the resource person. The seminar focused on hazards of chemical pesticides, modern trends in organic farming, effective use of bio-fertilizers, integrated pest management etc. Dr. Saju Abraham of Botany Department co-ordinated the programme.

SEMINAR ON EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND SELF SIMILARITY
The Department of Statistics, Newman College, Thodupuzha in association with the Old Students Forum, and the Department of Statistics, Cochin University of Science and Technology organized a seminar on 'Experimental Design and Self Similarity' on 3 August, 2011. The main objective of the seminar was to provide an interactive forum to discuss the major developments in Experimental Design and Self Similarity. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:ITS USES AND ABUSES
Centre for Women Empowerment, Newman College, Thodupuzha organized a one day seminar on 'Information Technology: Its Uses and Abuses' on 13 September, 2011. Smt. R. Nishanthini IPS, A.S.P., Thodupuzha took classes for the girl students of the college. Prof. Marykutty John, Department of Physics, and Prof. Leena Mathews, Department of English, were the co-ordinators of the programme.
SEMINAR ON QUALITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION: STRATEGIES AND PERSPECTIVES
Under the auspices of Internal Quality Assurance Cell, a seminar on "Quality in Higher Education: Strategies and Perspectives" was held on 4 October, 2011. Dr. Tharsis Joseph, Former Principal, Devamatha College, Kuravilangad and NAAC peer team member, took classes for teachers of Newman College. Rev. Fr. Paul Nedumpurath, former Principal of the College, presided over.

Department of Malayalam organized a one day seminar on 'Emerging Trends in Visual Arts' on 29 July, 2011. Sri. T.M. Abraham, Vice Chairman, Sangheetha Nataka Academy, talked on "NAADAKATHINTE RANGABHASHA" and Rev. Dr. George Sebastian S.J. on "THIRAKKADHAYUDE OODUM PAAVUM", Rev. Dr. Raju Jacob, Head, Department of Malayalam was the co-ordinator of the programme.
SEMINAR ON ANIMAL ETHICS
The Department of Zoology, in association with Kerala Forest Department, organized a state level seminar on 'Animal Ethics' on 7 October, 2010. Dr. P.A. Easa from the Forest Research Institute, Peechi, and Sri. A.G. Babu, co-opted member of AWBI, Chennai, delivered lectures on 'Securing the Future of Elephants in India' and 'Animal Ethics in Kerala Scenario' respectively. Prof.Thampi Varghese, Head, Department of Zoology facilitated the programme.
TRAINING IN GENERAL INFORMATICS
Kerala State Higher Education Council sponsored a Three Day Training programme on 'Informatics' from 25 to 27 November, 2010 to train college teachers in computer application. Prof. S. Sindhu, the Principal, College of Applied Sciences, Thodupuzha, inaugurated the programme. The experts in computer application from Viswajyothi College of Engineering, Vazhakulam, were the resource persons. Prof. K.A. Benny, Department of History, was behind the successful conduct of the programme.

Kerala State Higher Education Council sponsored a two-day workshop on 'Methodological Innovations in Science Learning' on 6 and 7 January, 2011. Dr. Babu Joseph, former Vice Chancellor, CUSAT, inaugurated and the resource persons, Dr. A.M. Mathai, McGill University, Canada, Dr. Thomas Mathew, University of Maryland, USA Dr. N. Unnikrishnan, U.C. College, Alwaye, Dr. Aby P. Varghese, M.A. College, Kothamangalam, and Prof.. M.V. John, M. A. College, Ramapuram, engaged the different sessions. Prof. R.K. Pillai, Department of Physics and Dr. Lovely Mathew P., Department of Chemistry, were in charge of this programme.
SEMINAR ON INVESTOR AWARENESS
The PG Department of Commerce along with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and National Stock Exchange of India held a seminar on 'Investor Awareness' on 22 August, 2011. Dr. K.K. Ramesh, Faculty of the Indian Institute of Management, Calicut, inaugurated and delivered the key-note address. Mr. Ravi Jain from NSE made a multi-media presentation about NSE activities. Mr. Renjith Krishnan, Assistant Educational Officer, ICSI-Centre for Corporate Governance, Research and Training, Navi Mumbai, felicitated the gathering and donated many books to the Newman College Library.
WORKSHOP ON METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
The Dept. of Economics organized a two-day workshop on "Methodology of Social Sciences" on 22 and 23 August, 2011. The workshop was sponsored by Kerala State Higher Education Council. Rev. Fr. Paul Nedumpurath, former Principal of the college, inaugurated the workshop in the function presided over by the incumbent Principal, Dr. T.M. Joseph. Dr. S. Muraleedharan, Research Guide, Dept. of Economics, Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, spoke on the topic, 'Epistemology of Social Science.' Prof. P.G. Haridas, former Principal, S.S.V. College, Perumbavoor, led a session on 'Historical Foundations of Social Science'. Dr. Vishaka Varma, Govt. College, Kodungalloor, spoke on the topic 'Interdisciplinary Approach in Social Science with special reference to Psychology and Economics." Dr. M.S. Vijayakumari, Dept. of Economics, M.A. College, Kothamangalam, spoke on 'Methodology of Social Science' with special reference to Economics. The workshop concluded with the valedictory function in which Prof. Jessy Mathew, Head, Department of Economics presided over. The workshop was coordinated by Ms. Liji George, Dept. of Economics.
SEMINAR ON MEDIA ETHICS
The seminar on 'Media Ethics' was conducted on 06 January, 2012. Msgr. Thomas Malekudy presided over the meeting. Dr. K.S. Radhakrishnan, the PSC Chairman and former Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankarachariya University, Kalady inaugurated the seminar. Sri. T.C. Mathew, a noted journalist, moderated while Sri. Sebastian Paul, Ex.MP. and Dr. Kurias Kumbalakuzhy, Journalist, presented papers.
SEMINAR ON RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The Dept. of Economics organized a seminar on 'Research Methodology' on 28 September, 2011 exclusively for the students of Economics. Dr. Joy George, St. Thomas College, Pala, led the seminar. It provided the fundamental information for social science investigations and project works.
APPROACHES TO THE STUDY OF HISTORY
Dr. Abraham Daniel, Principal of Henry Baker College, Melukavu, lectured on the 'Approaches to the study of History' on 21 July, 2010. It was held under the auspices of the Department of History. Prof. M. J. Jacob, Head, Dept. of History coordinated the programme.
WORKSHOP ON GENERAL INFORMATICS
Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, Newman College, Thodupuzha, organized a three day workshop on General Informatics from 24 to 26 August, 2011, sponsored by The Kerala State Higher Education Council. Sri. George Eapen, District Informatics Officer, Idukki, Dr. Santhoshkumar G., CUSAT, Dr. Surendran Cherupuzha, CUSAT, Dr. Kannan C., CUSAT, Prof. Mathai S., CUSAT and Smt. Nishanthini IPS, ASP, Thodupuzha, were the main speakers. The workshop was enlightened by eminent speakers from various branches of informatics. The participants also had an opportunity to have hand on experience with software packages, which have high use in science. The programme was co-ordinated by Prof. Rosaline Francis, Head, Department of Chemistry and Dr. Bejoy Thomas, Department of Chemistry.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS OF PLASTIC
The Department of Botany, Newman College, Thodupuzha, conducted a seminar on 'Environmental Hazards of Plastic' on 22 March, 2012 for the parents of the students. It was inaugurated by Sri. T.J. Joseph, the Chairman, Municipal Council, Thodupuzha. The famous Environmentalist Dr. C.M. Joy led the seminar. The programme was sponsored by KSCSTE.
WORKSHOP ON INDIAN CLASSICAL ARTS
Newman College, Thodupuzha and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academi, Trissur, jointly hosted a state level workshop on Indian Classical Arts on 18 December, 2011. Fifty participants from four Colleges in Idukki and Kottayam attended the workshop. Dr. C.P. Unnikrishnan, a famous Kathakali and Natyasasthra specialist,talked on Bharathanatiyam. Sri. Arackel Nandakumar, a famous music director, was the resource person for the talk on music. Sri. Shaiju from Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academi felicitated on the occasion. Dr. Saju Abraham, Department of Botany, was the programme co-ordinator.
KANNASSA MEMORIAL TALK
Kannassa Study Centre, M.G. University and the Department of Malayalam, Newman College, Thodupuzha jointly organized Kannassa Memorial Talk on 15 September 2011. Dr. Puthussery Ramachandran delivered the key note address. Rev. Dr. Raju Jacob, Head, Department of Malayalam was the programme co-ordinator.
SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS
As part of the National Science Day Celebration on 24 February 2011, the Department of Physics could enable a talk from Dr. Minu Joy, Associate Professor, Alphonsa College, Pala.
The Centres for Gandhian Studies and Centre for Women Empowerment together arranged a Ten Day Yoga workshop for the lady teachers of the college with Dr.C. Manoj, Sreeramakrishna Ayurveda Yogasramam, Thodupuzha, as the master trainer and resource person from 14 to 28 February, 2011.
NEWMAN DAY LECTURE AND MERIT DAY
The toppers of each final year degree batch were honoured on the Merit Day held on 19 August, 2011. Adv. Charly Paul was the Chief Guest and he delivered the Newman day lecture. Prof. K.P. Benny from the Department of Commerce was the coordinator of the programme.
