Mission of the Department
Overview of the Department
The Department of Economics was established in 1967 with a BA Degree course in Economics. The first Head of the Department was Prof. T M Mani (expired). The first batch of BA Economics came out in 1970. In 2013, the Department was elevated into the status of a Post Graduate Department.
The Department keeps consistent performance at the curricular and co curricular activities and secures dignified positions at university, state and national levels. In 2020 and 2018 the Department bagged the First rank in M A Economics. Besides the first rank, the Department secured the third, fifth, sixth and seventh university ranks in 2018. The Department also achieved Fourth rank in M A Economics in 2017.
The Department organizes various international and national level workshops, seminars, conferences and other programmes. Every year we organize unique programmes like ‘Talent Scan’-(Quiz competition for Higher Secondary Students), Newman Youth Excellence Award and Newman Youth Icon Award. All the curricular and co-curricular activities of the Department is organised and conducted under the banner of Newman Economic Forum (NEF).
The alumni association of the Department is one of the strongest alumni associations in the college. The first Sunday of every December is observed as the alumni day of the Department. There are a number of endowments constituted by the alumni association for the students in line with their academic performance and economic background.
The Department always strives hard to achieve the lofty ideals envisioned by the founding fathers of the college and beloved former faculty members of the Department. Currently, Dr. Jenni K Alex is serving his Alma Mater as the Head of the Department.
1.7 Methodology of teaching adopted
The Student Centered Approach is adopted in teaching. Every year a Post Admission Test for Both U G and P G students is conducted for finding out the slow learner and advanced learner. Remedial Coaching and Peer Tutoring has been given to the slow learners. The advanced lerners are assigned tasks like participation and presentation of papers at state, national and internationsl seminars, conferences and workshops. The teaching methods include Lecturing, Remedial Coaching, Peer Tutoring, Projects, Assignments, Seminars etc.
