R. K.Pillai, Dept. of Physics: 'Aakashathile Albhuthngal' (Wonders of the sky), DC Books ,Kottayam, 2009. This book is an excellent guide to all those who are interested in Astronomy. Even though this is written for children, adults also can read and enjoy this with ease. There are nine chapters in the book, each of them deals with a specific subject, such as measurement of time, different stellar constellations, Zodiac, Telescopes etc. This book became an instant bestseller and two thousand copies of it are sold within seven months and its reprint appeared in March 2010.

Kochuthresia Thomas, Jeevitha Prasnangale Engane Neridam: Essays, National Book Stall, Kottayam, 2009. Prof.Kochuthresia Thomas is the former Head, Department of Zoology. She is a noted public figure with rich experience in local self government. She is an author and prolific writer who writes frequently in popular magazines on issues that affect man and society. This book is a collection of articles published in Aaroagya magazine. The book deals with the problems faced by the modern man and recommend seven techniques to solve problems to live cheerfully.

K.V.Dominic, (ed); Postcolonial Readings in Indo-Anglian Literature, Authors Press, New Delhi, 2009. Post colonialism deals with the effects of colonisation on cultures and societies. From the late 1970s the literary critics started using it to discuss the various cultural aspects of colonisation. Postcolonialism became a major material for study in Commonwealth Literature and New Literatures. Now it is used to signify the political, linguistic and cultural experience of societies that were former European colonies. Prof.Dominic’s work is a major contribution to study postcolonial society and culture .

Dominic's Selected Short Stories in Contemporary Indo-Anglian Literature is a delightful volume to read and preserve. Stories in this collection are narrated with remarkable skill and artistry. A peculiar suspense prevails in some of them and this holds the reader's attention unto the last. There are twenty one short stories in this book, written by writers from different walks of life—professors lecturers, professional poets and story tellers, scientists, freelance writers, business executives, research scholars etc.

K.V. Dominic, Pathos in the Short Stories of Rabindranath Tagore, New Delhi: Sarup Book Publishers, 2009. The monograph on the short stories of Rabindranath Tagore throws new light on various characters—men, women, and children— with reference to Tagore's psychological realism, which is well-brought out through the mode of pathos. The book is noteworthy for its lucid exposition of the nuances of creative expression unique to Tagore. It is a welcome addition to the rich storehouse of criticism on Tagore.

K. V. Dominic, Reason and Fantasy. (Poems and Short Stories). Published by the author, Thodupuzha: 2009. It is a collection of twenty eight poems and five short stories. Relation between Man, Nature and God is the major theme of the poems. Non human beings and the marginalised people of the society are the main protagonist of the poems as well as the stories.

Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan, Science Education in India: Publication Division Newman College,Thodupuzha, 2009. The fifth Rev. Dr. John Vallamattom Memorial Lecture in the series has been delivered by Padmasree Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan, an eminent scientist of national repute at ICUAA, Pune, on 6th September 2008. The topic has a contemporary relevance. Even after decades of planned emphasis on science education, the country had only produced a mediocre scientific community. Prof. Padmanabhan dealt at length on the question "why Indian science is not able to produce one more Nobel laureate in any branch of science after the independence?"

T.M. Joseph, (ed); Decentralized Governance and Development, New Delhi: Deep & Deep Publications, 2009. This book is an attempt to examine the evolving nature of governance structures in India and its implications on decentralisation and development. Contents of this book include : Decentralised Governance and Service Delivery: Perspectives and Practices: Panchayat Raj in Post-73td Amendment Scenario and Socio-Political Changes in Villages etc.

T. M. Joseph, (ed); Governance Reforms: Challenges Ahead, New Delhi, Kanishka 2009. This collection of 12 essays addresses some pertinent issues that emanate from the emerging paradigm of governance. The major areas of concern are globalization, civil society, gender, social services and infrastructure. This documentation will help carry forward creation of knowledge and formulation of strategies in the field of rural management to meet the future challenges of rural development.

T. M. Joseph, (ed); New Governance Paradigm: Issues in Development, New Delhi: Kalpaz Publications, 2009. Governance is one of the most debated concepts in contemporary discussions in the domain of development. The new paradigm of governance in the area of globalization reframes the roles of institutions of state, market and civil society. This involves questioning of the erstwhile dominant role of the state and strengthening the role of other institutions. Weakening and erosion of major modern institutions of governance such as legislature, bureaucracy and judiciary in third world reflects the growing governance crisis. Social tension and conflicts based on identity are on rise. This has significant implications on issues such as social equity, justice and environment that affect the life of people, especially the third world poor etc. are discussed is the book.

Jacob John Kattakkayam, Challenges of Higher Education: Recent Trends, Publication Division Newman College, Thodupuzha, 2010. This publication is the result of a memorial lecture delivered by Dr. Jacob John Kattakkayam Director, Academic Staff College, University of Kerala. He lectured at length on the 'Recent Trends in Higher Education". in honour of our former Principal late Prof. U.V. John, on 7th Dec. 2009.

Proceedings: Department of Political Science brought out the proceedings of the UGC sponsored two-day national seminar on “Participatory Democracy and Human Development” on 20th and 21st March 2009.

Publication Index - Thodupuzha: Publication Division Newman College 2009. Institutions of higher learning are essentially the centers meant for the production and dissemination of knowledge. Research, thus, becomes an integral component of our higher education agenda. This publication index provides a cursory look at the wide array of knowledge generated by our faculty through the publication of journals, monographs, books, research papers, seminar proceedings and popular articles, over a period of time.

Proceedings: Department of Political Science brought out proceedings of theUGC sponsored national seminar on “Water Governance in India: Challenges and Strategies”. Seminar was held on 18-19, 2010.

JOURNALS & MAGAZINES

Trade wind is an academic journal brought out by the Commerce Department annually. The latest issues released are December 2008 and December 2009. The issues deal with tourism industry in India and agricultural concerns of the nation respectively. Prof. Jose Varghese and Sri. K.M. Thomas are editors.

INDIAN JOURNAL OF POSTCOLONIAL LITERATURES (IJPCL)
IJPCL is a highly acclaimed bi annual academic journal of the English Department of the College (Volume 9 Number 1 June 2009) was dedicated to Kamala Das. The issue includes twenty three critical essays, six short stories, two interviews, nineteen poems of seven poets and seven reviews. Volume 9 Number 2 (December 2009) contains twenty two critical essays, three short stories, one interview, nine poems of five poets and six reviews. In addition there was a memoir on Kamala Das and a tribute to Prof. Meenakshi Mukherjee. Editor Prof. K.V. Dominic.

NEW MAN AND SOCIETY
A new academic journal titled “New Man and Society” has been launched during the year. The first issue is a special issue on “Science and Religion”. The Patron of the College, Mar George Punnakottil, Bishop of Kothamangalam, released the journal on 10th March 2010. This bi-annual journal is devoted to the problems of man in society. It covers the philosophical, scientific and social aspects of human life in the era of modernisation and development. This issue is edited by Prof. R.K. Pillai, Dr. Joe Jacob and Rev Fr. Manuel Pichalakattu.

JOY OF PHYSICS: The fourth volume of the annual publication “ Joy of Physics” from the Department of Physics focuses on the latest developments in spintronic materials, polymers, nanotechnology, glass ceramics and microwave dielectric resonators, large hadron collider, recent trends in antenna research, comparison of scientific models using bayesian methods, quantum optics, vacuum arc remelting etc. Fundamental articles on the 'birth and evolution of technology era' and an 'Introduction to the Laser' have also been included in the current issue. The journal is edited by Prof. R. K Pillai and Dr. Joe Jacob.

KALALAYAM WEB SITE FOR NEWMAN COLLEGE
The KALALAYAM project supported by the Govt. of Kerala is for popularizing Malayalam computing among the college students and teachers. KALALAYAM.IN is a special initiative for colleges in Kerala. One college is selected from each district and the government provides free web space to create a web site for the institution. The participating institution can use this web space to publish various types of documents written in Malayalam like stories, poems etc. to showcase themselves in the web. Newman College is the first institution which launched its website on this portal and became a model for all other participants. The website address is : http://newmancollege.kalalayam.in/. The project has two broad objectives: 1. Strengthen local language, Malayalam, using the possibilities provided by Information and Communication Technologies. 2. Address the linguistics barrier which prevents the people of Kerala from taking advantage of the new technologies.

NEWSLETTER
Newman News, the official news letter of the college had its fifth issue released on December 2008, Vol. V No. 1. Newman News' serves the purpose of a window, through which the outside world comes to know how the institution is functioning. You will find all major curricular and extra-curricular activities, achievements of the staff and students, academic and infrastructural additions on the campus etc. Editor: Dr.P.A.Jose, Department of Political Science.

COLLEGE MAGAZINE

‘Sadhwalam’ is the annual magazine of the college students. It contains Principal's report and reports of co-curricular organizations like N.C.C., N.S.S, Women's Cell, Toursim Club, and CSM etc. It covers creative writings of the students and photographs of important events. The Staff Editor of the magazine is Rev. Fr. Raju Jacob, Assistant Professor, Department of Malayalam.
